Yo

I’m a shirking wastrel blogger.  Sue me.  Anyway, there’s been a bunch of cool Phasma stuff going down over at phasmamovie.com/blog and I’ve been horrible about updating this site. Head over there and check it out.  I will, however, post our new poster here and tell you to check back here on June 29th for some very cool festival announcements.  If I forget to post it here…well, you know where to go.

Bass Pro Shops: The Hunt

If you’re a gun-totin’, venison eatin’, video game playin’ type of guy/gal, then you might appreciate the latest trailer I wrote/directed/produced for Psyclone Games and Bass Pro Shops.  And yes, there’s a lot of bambi violence, but I promise that no real animals were harmed in the making of this video game trailer.  The game hits retail shelves this summer.

And just for fun, here’s the similar, but different trailer for Bass Pro Shops: The Strike. Currently available at fine retailers everywhere.

And finally, none of this would have been possible without the mad filmmaking/editing skills of my friend Aaron Gelperin over at Wide Angle Studios.  He’s one talented dude.

Some of the cast and crew of Phasma went on a little ghost hunt at the supposedly haunted Mounds Theater in Saint Paul MN.  ’Twas a lot of fun.

Fast, Cheap Movie Thoughts

John Gaspard, author of books such as “Fast, Cheap & Under Control” and “Fast, Cheap and Written that Way,” runs a cool blog with the inevitable title of Fast, Cheap Movie Thoughts. He interviews numerous indie filmmakers (unknown and well-known) about their background, craft, and strategies to get their movies made.  It’s a fun read for filmmakers and indie film fans alike and I have the distinct honor of being the latest filmmaker to be interviewed.

Here’s a small bit of it, but you’ll have to head over to his site to read the rest.

Where did the idea come from?

MATT: I’ve always been keenly interested in both science and the supernatural, so actual supernatural science didn’t seem like a big stretch to explore. I also came across a true story about Thomas Edison and how he had tried to build a real device to communicate with the dead. It was near the end of his life, so we’re not really sure if he was losing his marbles or if he was actually onto something, but his machine is now relegated to myth and history. I thought it would be fun to dust off Mr. Edison’s old idea and give it a run.

The ghost and the sci-fi aspects of the film are incredibly intriguing to me, but it was my number one priority to make sure I had complex believable characters and a story that kept you interested.

Phantastic Promotion for Philm

IFP Minnesota has just launched their “Independent Filmmaker Professional Development” seminar series and we are honored that they asked my producer and I to give a little talk about the promotional efforts we’ve enacted for Phasma Ex Machina. It should be a lot of fun and hopefully we’ll have ample time for Q&A.   Here’s the description:

Phantastic Promotion for Philm
Hosts: Matt Osterman & Jennifer Kramer
October 17, 2–4pm
Price: $10/$5 members/Free to IFP MN Fiscal Sponsorship Clients

Producer Kramer and writer/director Osterman have done a bang-up job of promoting their feature length supernatural film Phasma Ex Machina from its inception. Using social networks, YouTube, and other vehicles, Jennifer and Matt have had their film’s trailer go viral in a matter of hours. Phasma Ex Machina was invited to IFP NY’s Rough Cuts Lab in June and recently returned to NYC as one of ten films in the U.S. to be selected for the prestigious IFP Filmmakers Lab. Jennifer and Matt will discuss the many tactics and tools they implemented to call wide attention/attract funding to their movie.

Hope to see you there!

This is what I look like after a few dozen meetings and a couple late night/early morning trailer screenings in NYC.  Would I do it all over again?  In a heartbeat…

*Hat tip to Jon Thomas for the pic** I did not have a monopoly on fatigue as you can see my producer (Jennifer Kramer) napping peacefully behind the bars.

The end of post-production is only a few days away and we figured it’s the perfect time to throw a party.  Come celebrate with us and help me thank all the brave folks who worked on the film!
